Minister seeks completion of dedicated freight corridors by June 2022

Mr Piyush Goyal, Minister for Railways and Commerce & Industry and Consumer Affairs, Food & Public Distribution, is continuously reviewing the progress of various sections under completion of the Dedicated Freight Corridor (DFC) on both the East and West corridors.

‌During his latest review, Railway officials gave inputs about the progress being made in all the sections and also some of the challenges being faced in getting work completed in certain sections. The Minister said that the project needs to be monitored on a daily basis to ensure that the completed project is handed over to the nation by June 2022.

The Minister said that as the project completion gathers momentum, emphasis also needs to be given to development of freight terminals along the corridors in order to boost business operations for all stakeholders.

Indian Railways is developing the dedicated freight corridors to provide exclusive high-speed movement for goods trains.

In the first phase, DFCCIL is constructing the Western DFC (1,504 route km) and Eastern DFC (1,856 route km including PPP section of Sonnagar-Dankuni).

The EDFC, starting from Sahnewal near Ludhiana (Punjab), will pass through the states of Punjab, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar and Jharkhand to terminate at Dankuni in West Bengal. The Western Corridor, connecting Dadri in Uttar Pradesh to Jawaharlal Nehru Port (JNPT) in Mumbai, will traverse through the states of UP, Haryana, Rajasthan, Gujarat and Maharashtra of WDFC and EDFC (excluding the Sonnagar-Dankuni PPP section). Thus, 2,800 route km is scheduled to be commissioned by June 2022.
The dedicated freight corridors are being seen as game-changers in the economic development of India.

The Prime Minister Mr Narendra Modi had recently dedicated two sections of DFCCL on the Eastern and Western Corridors to the nation – the Rewari-Madar section on the Western Corridor and the New Khurja-New Bhaupur section on the Eastern Dedicated Freight Corridor, said a release.
