Railways handles 10 pc more freight in April


Freight figures continue to maintain high momentum in terms of earnings and loading in April 2021 for the Indian Railways.


It recorded a more than 10% increase in freight loading, at 111.47 million tonnes (MT), as compared to the normal 2019-20 year. The previous best April saw 101.04 MT in April 2019.


The cargo handled in April 2021 included 51.87 million tonnes of coal, 14.83 million tonnes of iron ore, 3.47 million tonnes of foodgrains, 2.53 million tonnes of fertilisers, 3.58 million tonnes of mineral oil, 7.1 million tonnes of cement (excluding clinker) and 4.88 million tonnes of clinker.


Besides, April 2021 saw the Railways earn Rs 11,163.93 crore from freight loading.


A number of concessions/discounts are being offered by the Railways to make freight movement attractive. Also, the improvements in freight handling will be institutionalised and incorporated in the upcoming zero-based time table.


Covid-19 has been used by the Railways as an opportunity to improve all-round efficiencies and performance, stressed an official release.
