JNPT honoured with ‘Major Port of Year’ award

Recognising its excellence in port development and management, the Jawaharlal Nehru Port Trust (JNPT) was recently honoured with the ‘Major Port of the Year’ award at an awards function organised by CNBC TV 18 here recently.

Mr A. P. V. N. Sarma, IAS, Union Shipping Secretary, presented the award to Mr S. Shahzad Hussain, IAS, Chairman of JNPT.

The awards function was a prelude to the CEO Forum 2008, which saw participation from the ‘Who’s who’ of the port and shipping industry.

A panel of distinguished leaders of the maritime industry, headed by Mr Sarma, deliberated on issues, challenges and opportunities related to the industry.

JNPT had improved its cargo throughput in 2007-08 by 24.60 per cent over that of the previous fiscal, which was the highest growth rate year-on-year among all the Major Ports. It also had the lowest turnaround time of 1.85 days. These were some of the factors that resulted in JNPT winning the award, says a release.
