No move to import rice, says Scindia

There is no immediate plan to import rice, but the government may consider overseas purchases if it fails to buy adequate quantity from local farmers, the Minister of State for Commerce and Industry, Mr Jyotiraditya Scindia, told Parliament.

Mr Scindia also said that there was no proposal to lift the ban on export of non-Basmati rice. Basmati exports fetched $ 1.36 billion between April and September 2009, he added.
