India talking to stakeholders to safeguard interests in Myanmar’s Sittwe Port

India is working with Myanmar’s military government and is also in touch with the rebels to safeguard its interests in the strategically located Sittwe Port which seeks to provide an alternative route for connectivity from India’s eastern coast to the north-eastern states. The India-built Sittwe Port, in Myanmar’s Rakhine State, is part of the Kaladan Multimodal Transit Transport corridor, and opened in May 2023. It connects India’s north-eastern states to the Bay of Bengal, advancing the country’s Act East policy and strengthening regional connectivity. The port has handled over 109,000 tonnes of cargo so far, showcasing its potential to bolster trade. Sittwe Port also enhances India’s role in the Indo-Pacific region and strengthens its position in sub-regional initiatives such as the BIMSTEC, as per a report.
