Govt notifies ban on all imports, goods transit from Pak; bars Pakistani-flagged ships from Indian ports
The Commerce Ministry has notified a newly added provision in the Foreign Trade Policy (FTP) mentioning the prohibition of direct or indirect import or transit of all goods originating in or exported from Pakistan with immediate effect until further orders. The notification said the provision was imposed in the interest of national security and public policy. While direct imports from Pakistan have been minuscule, some goods were entering the country through indirect channels or via third countries. Trade has become the first casualty amid the escalating India-Pakistan tensions, with New Delhi already announcing the closure of trade through the Attari-Wagah border - the only land border crossing between the two countries. The Attari-Wagah border saw trade worth Rs 3,886.53 crore in 2023-24. India’s strategic moves are expected to have a severe economic impact on small traders and manufacturers in Pakistan, as per a report.
Cargo ships barred
Meanwhile, keeping in view the present situation, the Directorate General of Shipping (DGS) has issued an Order barring Pakistan-flagged ships from visiting any Indian port.
Also, Indian flag ships shall not visit any ports in Pakistan.
This is to ensure safety of Indian assets, cargo and connected infrastructure, in public interest and in the interests of Indian shipping. Any exemption or dispensation from this order shall be examined and decided on case-to-case basis, the DGS communique said.
