Port union to participate in nationwide strike on May 20

The Water Transport Workers Federation of India (WTWFI) has reportedly decided to participate in the nationwide strike called by the Central Platform of Trade Unions on May 20 against the proposed implementation of four labour codes. The national working committee of WTWFI, which met in Kochi, observed that the four labour codes would take away all the basic rights of the Indian working class. Evaluating the situation prevailing in Major Ports, it urged the government to withdraw the decision to amend the Major Port Authorities Act 2021 through its (Amendment) Bill 2025. Mr CD Nandakumar, President and Mr T. Narendra Rao, General Secretary, WTWFI, also raised concerns over several provisions of the Indian Ports Bill 2025 and asked the government to hold discussions with all stakeholders, including the port workers federations, before placing it in Parliament, as per a report.
