Major Ports improve performance

The country’s Major Ports, in 2023-24 (FY24), registered a 9 per cent improvement in turnaround time, of 48 hours, compared to 52.9 hours the year before as infrastructure and processes are strengthened, reports said. Faster movement through the ports also resulted in a higher cargo loading ability, as Major Ports saw a 4.5 per cent increase in total traffic at 819 million metric tonnes (MMT) in FY24. The average output of each vessel per day at berth increased by 7.5 per cent in FY24 year-on-?ear to 18,925 tonnes, the result of investing in newer, technologically advanced cranes. Total vessels handled by the Major Ports increased by 6.32 per cent to 23,240 ships, as per the reports.
